Message from the reunion committee

The young Swoop & Bobo, as they were back then.

What a Night?!
Hello all.

Just wanted to say a big ‘thankyou’ to everyone who turned out for the Reunion. It was great to see everyone and to catch up with so many people.

It was plain that everyone was happy to see people who they lost touch with years ago. For some, it was 25 years since they last saw each other.

The photos of the night are on the website but if anyone has any photos please email them to Jules Mann via the defenceregistry@gmail.com address and we want photos which you wouldn’t normally release for public viewing!

Due to the venue opening its doors to the public at 10pm, a lot of people left for other night spots and split up without the chance to farewell each other. A lesson was learned from this and won’t happen again next time. What next time????...........

We are looking at some time in February for another shindig. But also thinking perhaps the second Saturday in December for Christmas drinks get together. All details to be advised, so again keep an eye out on the web site. We’ll send emails to as many as possible once we’ve finalised arrangements. You can vote for your preference on the right side of this page.

All in all, the reunion was a success and was a real blast from the past. Those who couldn’t make it, you’ll no doubt make up for it at the follow-up event.

Special mention to everyone who travelled from interstate. Great stuff.

Keep in touch!!

The Committee.

PS. Some more old photos have been uploaded to the photo gallery.

Reunion night photos

What a great night of catching up with old friends.

Well done "Nutbush champion" Al and Ken for
organising the great event.

Does Darren Smith look like Kamahl or Shrek? Vote on the Poll.

Derwood says "Vote Yes for Kamahl", but Shrek is the favourite...

Tonight is the night !

Well it’s nearly time. All the preparations are complete and all we have to do now is turn up and have a great time.

Just a couple of final reminders.

The Elevated Night Club will open for us at 6:00pm, though the rest of the facility is open much earlier for those wanting a head start. There is an elevator servicing all floors so don’t worry about climbing stairs. Smokers are provided for in a heated area adjacent to the Uni Pub on University Ave.

Tickets can be collected at the door for those who haven’t yet received them. Name tags will be provided and we ask you complete one of these and display it prominently. (No Ken, not on your groin).

Finger food will be served in two lots at approximately 7:30pm and 8:30pm. Tea and coffee can be ordered at the bar and there will be no charge for these.

If you feel the need for a more substantial meal, the Bistro on the 2nd floor stays open till 2:00am, but you will have to pay for that. (This is probably where Doddsy will end up.)

Around 9:00pm we will draw the Door Prize ($100).

Members of the public will be admitted to the Nightclub around 10:00pm.

There will be several cameras there and we hope to place the photos taken at the Reunion on the website asap.

We look forward to seeing you all there. If you have any questions contact Al on 0412 607 354.

Cheers.

Hello Everybody from Defence Central Registry

Reunion Update – 5th August

Hi All.

We have made great progress over the past couple of weeks in tracking down other former DCR staff, whose response to attending has been excellent. We are now expecting over 70 people to show up.

We have also been contacted by people who will not be able to attend but are keen to catch up with former colleagues. To that end we will definitely be having a get together in early December, before everyone goes on holidays. This will be very informal and just a matter of roll up if you can. Keep an eye on the website for more details but it probably be at a venue in Civic.

Could I ask for final payment by the 17th of August for tickets please?

We have to provide final numbers and pay for catering, one week out from the Reunion. People coming from interstate, or those in Canberra who have not picked up their tickets in person, will able to collect them at the door on the night. Again if you are not comfortable using electronic banking, or having any difficulty getting money to the ticket sellers, contact Al. (alan.dalling@defence.gov.au)

Also we are compiling music to be played on the night so if anyone has any particular request for and old fave, email Al and we’ll try and get it the playlist for you. (Lemmo has requested plenty of Bronski Beat and George Michael so that demographic is pretty much covered.)

19 sleeps to go!

Cheers.

Al

Message from Grace Anderson - full version

Hi to all my former workmates.

I send my apologies for not attending the reunion gathering and if you have another one down the track, I will certainly try to get there.

I remember so many of the people on the list and in the photos and would dearly love to see them again. Please give my regards to Karen and Al Dalling, Jo Jackson, Pat Brennan, Keith Prinn, Kevin McFadzen, Wilma Hopkins, Sue Seal, Pauline Bishop, Brendan O'Loghlin if you find him, and all the others who remember me. I was very pleased to see the notes from Gloria and Melitta. It is interesting to hear how people have moved on.

My husband and I moved to the Gold Coast in May 1997 to live in the beautiful 'Sunshine State' and we love it up here. We go fishing and play golf and generally enjoy life. I have done research and made a few family history DVD's going back to 1700's which has been very interesting. I do it from old family photos in a computer program and add titles and story and music etc. It is an interesting hobby.

I have just become a Great-Grandmother on 16th August 2007 with my granddaughter giving birth to twin girls, so that is an exciting event. (I am not old though).

I hope you all have an enjoyable time at the reunion and don't talk about me (ha! ha!).

Best wishes to you all

Message from Gloria (Tonkin) - full version

Hello everyone.

I am happily married (Brady Bunch 8 kids) with 8 grandchildren to Ralph Eifurth. I'm now Gloria Eifurth and live at 31 Second Street Ardrossan SA 5571 - crab and fishing country on the coast of York Peninsula.

When I left Defence, I went back to retail and managed stores for Coles / Fosseys at Weston Creek and Kippax and Tuggeranong, then managed stores for Lowes at Belconnen and Woden. Then moved over here to Ardrossan.

I am currently Bar / Gaming person at Ardrossan Hotel/motel.

I’ve had great times in Defence; drinking (and lunch) competitions at the Ainslie Football Club, BBQs at the river near Defence. Then we “migrated” to the Worker’s Club and other places including RAAF Fairbairn.

I’m sure Mick Cronin no longer “drives the fastest milk truck in the west”, or Terry Daly no longer plays baseball for the “Indians”? His brother was one of the best pitchers I’d seen.

I wonder if Nicholasses still own the mud-brick house near Hall? Is Tas still cooking fish and chips? I hope Brendon is still not barracking for Carlton and Greg, or was it Mark Nicholas, or both – one eyed Richmond?

I suppose Ken is still in his biker gear and riding to work and then doing a quick change – and the same when he “knocks” off, in case biker mates see him in office clothes??

Is Keith Prinn still boarding with someone or has he finally got his own place? – and, hopefully, married?!

Doddsy, well, he was a larrikin (good one, that is) and I still have a card and present he gave me for my birthday many moons ago.

Is John Wall still stripping off in his laundry when he gets home (he doesn’t like to take dirt into his home). Eilleen, only 2 points to make about her, and they were very obvious (I’m jealous) We all know what ‘they’ were!

I’ll stop here.

Thanks to all for a wonderful experience and good times.

I’ve probably forgotten or can’t (immediately) recall some names, but here goes (in no order)…

Ken (who?), Sissy (Tea Lady), Tas Moudakis, Peter Hanlin, Terry Daly, David Lovi, Mark and Lyn Nicholas, Abe van Arkel, Greg Nicholas, Helen Connor, Jo Jackson, Mick Cronin, Sandra Mead, Dale Thompson, Deb Donaldson, Carmel Warnock, Karen Gerrard, Barbara Grimes-hatcliffe, Mick Juelg, Margaret Lawrence, Karen Coughlin, Margaret Shorten, Brendan O’loghlin, Jenna Lyris, Dave Pettit, Colin Hopper, Mark Marmont, Grace Anderson, Tony Baker, Clive Blunden, Des Hitchcock, Bill Booth, Graham Dodds, Graham Summerville, Alan and Karen Dalling, Nick Strmota, David Eck, Alex Curtis, Julian, Judy Wing, Keith Prinn, Dub Kolobaric, Dave (in duelling banjos), Denise

Message from Melitta (full version)

Hello Everybody from Defence Central Registry

I am sorry I am unable to come to the reunion. I would have loved to come along and re-kindle friendships with those I knew who I have lost contact with and catch up with those that I see occasionally. I have lost contact with a lot of people which is a great shame, as I have many fond memories of those days and the wonderful people I met and shared good times with.

My life at that time (1980-1982) was busy and stressful and there were times I was difficult to be around “yes I will admit that.” My life as an extremely young single mother was tough, but I survived and eventually my daughter and I grew up. My daughter Michelle is now 28 years old. I am a happy and hope and think that I am a reasonably well adjusted sane adult.

My life thus far has been eventful and there is a lot to tell. I will not write it all down, as it would resemble war and peace and would not be of interest to those who did not know me. But in short, I have been a lot of places, lived lots of experiences and am truly honoured and fortunate to have the sometimes complicated, often eventful, mostly happy, sometimes sad, usually healthy and comparatively wealthy life I have.

I left Canberra in early 1992 and lived in Melbourne for 12 years; mostly as a single woman enjoying the music, restaurant, pub and theatre scene with my many friends. I lived mostly in Brighton and just before I left I brought a flat in St Kilda East. Melbourne brought great challenge to my life and gave me the environment and freedom to become the woman I am today.

I have travelled extensively, in Europe, Scandinavia, the UK, some Pacific Islands, nearly every country in Southeast Asia, some in North Asia and America (even up to Alaska), and Canada. Travel is one of my passions and one of my dreams is to join the Century Club.

In 2002 I fell in love with my partner and in 2004 I returned to Canberra. That same year, we left Canberra and were posted overseas to Cambodia. I cannot come to the reunion as we are still overseas. It has been a three year posting which finishes just the week after the reunion but due to uplift and other timing issues, I cannot come home early.

For those that would be interested, I did not have any more children. I also never married. My partner and I spend our time and money travelling the world and experiencing as much of life as we can. I was never settled and enjoy moving around and experiencing new people and places. I am living the life I love, with someone I love who loves me.

I suppose that one day we will settle down in one place, but that day is not yet. My partner and I will be in Canberra for only 4 months, before we embark on our next posting to Brazil which will be for another 2-3 years.

I wish each and every one of you happiness and hope that you have a really terrific night. I would like to be there to raise my glass with those of you I knew and remember absent friends and the good times we shared.

Happy Days and “Cheers”

Melitta Sterling (previously known as Melitta Sturesteps)

Reunion Update

Hi Everyone.

Ken, Clint, Jules and I went to the Uni Pub yesterday to discuss a few matters with their management. They threw another option at us which we have decided to accept.

We will be holding the Reunion on the fourth floor Elevated Room, of the Uni Pub complex rather than the Executive Club on the third floor.

Reasons being is that there is a dedicated dance floor and the cost is far less, meaning that tickets will cost $20. We couldn’t guarantee that ticket prices might increase if we stayed with the 3rd floor option.

There will be no difference to catering or drink costs but the only down side is that the venue opens to the public at 10:00pm. Might be a chance for Lemmo to finally pick up.

We will be starting the Reunion at 6:00pm with food served around 7:00pm.

Tickets are being designed and printed now and should be on sale by the end of next week. Any questions or requests please contact us at the usual place.

Cheers, Al.

Clarification

Sorry - the note below implied an rsvp date of 30 June - not so. But keep an eye on this space . KT

Who is coming? We need confirmation

Just an additional note on who is coming - we've found that there are some who have assumed that we "know" they are coming. We need actual confirmation, guys. This is important as the venue is based on numbers. We can't book for 50 and 100 turn up! So, if you know of someone who is attending and they haven't told us, you have our email addresses. Cheers. Reunion venue decided

After much deliberation and several field visits, the Reunion Organising Committee has settled on the Uni Pub in Civic as the site for the Reunion (see map below for location). The venue is central, relatively new, very plushly furnished and has ample free parking adjacent to the Reserve Bank building.

The Reunion is booked for Saturday 25th August, which will give people from interstate time to prepare and book accommodation etc. So far we have people wanting to come from Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Kickoff will be 7:00pm and the venue will stay open till about 1:00am.

We have booked the entire Executive Club, which is on the third floor of the Uni Pub complex. Access is by either stair or elevator, though smokers will have to come back to the ground floor to indulge.

Ticket costs are yet to be determined but should be in the vicinity of $20. This will include venue hire, music, food platters (there will be plenty of food) and a door prize. The ticket price does not include drinks however the Uni Pub is very reasonably priced for a Civic location.

A bank account for direct debit of ticket purchases will be established or can be paid in person to Alan Dalling at R1. (Looking for a volunteer in CP to accept same.) Further details will be announced as they become available.

If anyone has any photographs of Defence Central Registry functions or other situations that they would like to share, could they contact the Committee here to arrange for them to be placed on the website. From memory a couple of the Xmas parties were videotaped so if anyone has these we would love to get our hands on them as well.

At this stage we have contacted about 80 ex staff members and have had confirmation of attendance from 44 people. We really need to try and send the website details to as many people as possible to get numbers up so if you can think of anyone, please pass them on. Partners are most welcome to attend.

Another pre-Reunion drinks will be held, following on from the small get together at The Phoenix bar a few weeks back. Keep watching for more info.

In a nutshell

Venue: Executive Club, Uni Pub, Cnr University Ave & London Circ, Civic.

When: Saturday, 25th August, 2007.

Time: 7:00pm till late.

Cost: @ $20.00
Look forward to seeing everyone there!

DCR Reunion Committee.

PS. Big thanks to Jules Mann for setting up the website.

2007 Reunion - the idea

Hello all.

About 8 years ago a group of ex Defence Central Reg staff got together for drinks at the ACT Leagues (odd that…) before moving on into Civic to keep various other establishments in the black. This ‘Reunion’ was attended by about 25 to 30 staff and we all had a ball.

I bumped into Lindy Thompson at the Hyperdome a recently and Lindy suggested we have another Reunion. So the long and short of it is that Ken "The Duke" Trewartha, Clint "Swoop" Jory and myself are attempting to organise a Reunion sometime in not too distant future.

We have come up with the list below of all the staff that we could remember and we created the address list for this based on where we know people to be.

What we would like from you is to let us know if you are interested in attending and could you pass this email onto anyone else you know of that is not on the list. If you do that, could you flick me an email to defenceregistry@gmail.com with the person’s name and contact details so I can add it to the list we have here. Even if you just remember a name and don’t have the contact details, let me know.

The venue and the type of function will really depend on the response so feel free to suggest where and what you would like to do.

Look forward to hearing from you all.

Cheers, Al "Bo-Bo" Dalling (aka Big Gay Al)
